Rotary is committed to moving the needle in early literacy in our community. A child’s reading skills in elementary school dramatically influence the probability of high school graduation. Every year one in four students fail to graduate high school on time. An early investment in a child during the elementary years is critically important. The Rotary Club of Tallahassee has received a $3,000 District Grant for the program and also received a commitment of $1,000 from Tallahassee Sunrise Rotary Club for the initiative.

ReadingPals is an early literacy initiative which seeks to get students reading on grade level by the time they leave third grade. Caring adults are matched one-to-one with a student identified as a eligible, struggling reader and reads to them for one hour every week for the entire school year. There is a prescribed curriculum that was uniquely developed by Leon County Schools’ education experts. In addition to developing a trusting relationship with the students and helping with reading skills, each student takes home a free book every week.

United Way commits to provide the ReadingPals Curriculum (50 lesson plans), and the mandatory training and materials for the volunteers. We are excited that Rotary members would like to take on this great work by volunteering to be ReadingPals as well as providing the funds for the take-home books weekly. Rotary has adopted John A. Riley Elementary School and hope you will volunteer to be a Reading Pal this year. Please email Pam Wilson, Community Service Director, Rotary Club Tallahassee at [email protected] to sign up and to receive the training schedule. Training is in August, so please sign up soon!
